Description:
Adapted from Flora of North America, treatment by V.W. Steinmann (description and habitat information based on U.S.A. collections only):

Herbs, annual or perennial, from a slender taproot to a thickened rootstock. Stems prostrate to ascending (usually mound- or mat-forming), glabrous, puberulent, shortly pilose or hirsute, 7-25 cm. Leaves opposite; stipules distinct (or occasionally connate on one side of the stem), subulate, 0.3-0.6 mm, shortly pilose or hirsute; petiole 0.4-0.9 mm, glabrous, puberulent, shortly pilose or hirsute; blade ovate, elliptic, or oblong, 1.5-5 x 1-3 mm, base asymmetrical, rounded to slightly oblique, apex obtuse or acute, margin entire, venation obscure, only the midvein sometimes conspicuous, glabrous, puberulent, shortly pilose, or hirsute. Cyathia solitary in the distal nodes of the stems, these sometimes congested, very short and giving the appearance of the cyathia being clustered; peduncles absent or to 1.6 mm. Involucre campanulate, 0.6-1.1 x 0.5-1.3 mm; glands 4, oblong, 0.15-0.3 x 0.25-0.5 mm, dark pink to black purple; appendages present, ovate or flabellate, sometimes reduced to a thin rim around the outer margin of the gland, entire to shallowly lobed, 0.1-0.2 x 0.3-0.8 mm, white to pink. Staminate flowers 15-30. Pistillate flower: ovary glabrous, puberulent, or shortly pilose, styles 0.2-0.4 mm, 2-fid to 1/2 their length. Capsule ovoid to subglobose, 1.1-1.4 x 1.1-1.4 mm, glabrous, puberulent or shortly pilose; columella 0.9-1.2 mm. Seeds narrowly oblong-ovoid, quadrangular to nearly triangular in cross-section, 0.8-1.1 x 0.5-0.6 mm, pink-brown to light brown, smooth or faintly rippled.
Habitat:
Desert scrub, common in both pristine habitats and disturbed areas, especially along roadsides where it is often dominant; minus 20-1200 m. Flowering and fruiting year-round in response to sufficient moisture.
